The effect of two carotenoid sources, background colour and light spectrum on the body pigmentation of the clownfish Amphiprion ocellaris

Lorenzo Diaz-Jimenez et al.

Summary: Two laboratory studies with clownfish juveniles Amphiprion ocellaris found that body coloration depends on carotenoid source in the diet and tank background color rather than light spectra. It is recommended to include a minimum of 0.5% astaxanthin in the diet and keep the fish in tanks with a black background to maintain the intense red coloration of the species.

Potential natural carotenoid sources for the colouration of ornamental fish: a review

Sutharshiny Sathyaruban et al.

Summary: The attractive coloration of ornamental fishes in the aquarium fish industry relies on dietary carotenoids. Consumers prefer natural sources over synthetic ones. However, there is a need for further research on color stability and distribution patterns in ornamental fish, as well as the use of other natural carotenoid sources to reduce synthetic pigment products.
