Oxidation behavior and mechanism of aluminum oxynitride (AlON) at elevated temperatures

Summary: The oxidation behavior and mechanism of aluminum oxynitride (AlON) powder exposed to air at elevated temperatures between 800 degrees C and 1300 degrees C was studied. It was found that the weight of AlON powder increases to a maximum at 1150 degrees C and then decreases, with lattice expansion and transformation into alumina. The occurrence and disappearance of lone pair electrons in the oxidized products were observed along with the gradual oxidation of Al-N into Al-O-N groups.
