Hydrophobic functionalization of cellulosic substrate by tetrafluoroethane dielectric barrier discharge plasma at atmospheric pressure

Kartick K. Samanta et al.

Summary: Functionalization of cellulosic fabric using helium/tetrafluoroethane plasma transformed the fabric from highly hydrophilic to superhydrophobic, with significantly improved water repellency properties after multiple wash cycles. The reaction mechanism involving TFE fragments with cellulose at the nanometer level was elucidated through various analytical techniques, suggesting the feasibility of controlling plasma reactions for desired modifications of substrates.

Facile fabrication of hydrophobic cellulose-based organic/inorganic nanomaterial modified with POSS by plasma treatment

M. Z. Yao et al.

Summary: A novel hydrophobic cellulose-based organic/inorganic nanomaterial (cellulose/TS-POSS) was successfully prepared by oxygen plasma treatment followed by condensation reaction with TriSilanollsobutyl-Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane. The material exhibited super hydrophobicity with reduced surface energy and increased surface roughness, showing uniformly dispersed TS-POSS nanostructures on the nanometer scale bonded to cellulose through condensation reaction. This process offers new solutions for the facile fabrication of sustainable cellulose-based hydrophobic materials.

Double-crosslinked cellulose nanofiber based bioplastic films for practical applications

Kangyun Lee et al.

Summary: The study introduces a simple approach to fabricate high performance cellulose films with dual crosslinking. The optimized films exhibit good transmittance and high tensile strength, along with superior thermal stability and water resistance. These results could lead to the development of practical polysaccharide bioplastics with environmentally-friendly manufacturing processes.

Functional Nanocellulose, Alginate and Chitosan Nanocomposites Designed as Active Film Packaging Materials

Gregor Lavric et al.

Summary: The study found that polysaccharide-based films with added CNC are the most suitable for packaging purposes, and better dispersal of nanocellulose in chitosan than in alginate was observed. By adding CNC, the hydrophobicity of chitosan and alginate films increased, and chitosan with 3% CNC showed the highest contact angle and 15% lower moisture absorption compared to pure chitosan.
