Iron-bound carbon increases along a freshwater-oligohaline gradient in a subtropical tidal wetland

Jing Bai et al.

Summary: The study found that with increasing salinity in tidal wetlands, belowground biomass and root Fe(III) plaque content increased, promoting oxygen loss potential. Additionally, as salinity increased, the abundance of Fe-oxidizing bacteria increased, while Fe-reducing bacteria decreased.

Production of hydroxyl radicals following water-level drawdown in peatlands: A new induction mechanism for enhancing laccase activity in carbon cycling

Yunpeng Zhao et al.

Summary: The study found that under oxygenation of waterlogged peat samples for 24 hours, the cumulative concentrations of hydroxyl radical (center dot OH) produced ranged from 307-840 mmol g(-1). Factors affecting center dot OH production include an acidic environment, abundant reduced dissolved organic matter, and Fe(II). Additionally, the production of center dot OH enhanced laccase activity (the largest class of phenol oxidases in the soil) by 7.7% to 20.4% and increased soil respiration by 3.17% to 23.67% during the reoxidation of waterlogged peat samples.

Iron-bound organic carbon and their determinants in peatlands of China

Xinya Huang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the concentration, characteristics, and spatial variability of iron oxide-bound organic carbon (Fe-bound OC) in peatlands in central and west China. Results showed that Fe-bound OC concentration ranged widely, with coprecipitation identified as the dominant mechanism affecting the binding of OC to reactive iron oxides in the peatlands. The study highlighted the importance of total organic carbon (TOC) and reactive iron content in regulating the binding mechanism and accumulation of Fe-bound OC in peatlands.

Aboveground biomass and its spatial distribution pattern of herbaceous marsh vegetation in China

Xiangjin Shen et al.

Summary: Herbaceous marsh is a widely distributed wetland ecosystem with important ecological functions like water conservation and climate regulation. Investigating the biomass of marsh vegetation can provide a scientific basis for estimating the carbon storage and sequestration capacity of marshes, which play a key role in reducing climate warming.
