Feasibility assessment of next-generation drones powering by laser-based wireless power transfer

Ali Mohammadnia et al.

Summary: This study investigates the theoretical feasibility of a laser-based wireless power transfer mechanism for drone applications, showing that drones can be wirelessly charged during operation at a considerable distance with acceptable efficiency. The use of a two-phase cooling system for the PV panel is suggested to reduce the temperature. Results demonstrate the net power received by equipped drones using different PV materials at a 500 m distance, with GaAs providing the highest net power.

A 43.0% efficient GaInP photonic power converter with a distributed Bragg reflector under high-power 638 nm laser irradiation of 17 W cm-2

Yuki Komuro et al.

Summary: Optical wireless power transmission systems incorporating photovoltaic cells and lasers have the potential to serve as next-generation energy supply devices for automobiles and autonomous underwater vehicles. High photoelectric conversion efficiencies of over 40% are required for practical applications, with GaInP photonic power converters achieving up to 43.0% efficiency under high-power laser irradiation. Additionally, the highest efficiency of 46.0% was obtained at lower laser irradiation levels of 1.1 W cm(-2).
