Alloy design strategies to increase strength and its trade-offs together

Seung Zeon Han et al.

Summary: Metallurgists aim to enhance strength, ductility, formability, and conductivity of metals, but often face trade-offs. Morphological control of microstructure can help in improving the properties of metals through optimizing alloy design and reducing interfacial energy between phases.

Plastic deformation of single crystals of the equiatomic Cr-Mn-Fe-Co-Ni high-entropy alloy in tension and compression from 10 K to 1273 K

Marino Kawamura et al.

Summary: The plastic deformation behavior of single crystals of the Cr-Mn-Fe-Co-Ni high-entropy alloy has been studied at different temperatures, showing sensitivity to strain rate, temperature, and crystal orientation. Solid-solution hardening is identified as the main strengthening mechanism, with deformation twinning occurring at low temperatures, impacting the material's tensile properties.

Mechanical behavior of high-entropy alloys

Weidong Li et al.

Summary: Research in high-entropy alloys has been booming since the 2010s, focusing on the vast potential in compositions, microstructures, and properties. Efforts are mainly directed towards exploring the compositional space and microstructures, as well as understanding the mechanical behavior. However, there is still a lack of comprehensive studies on the mechanical behavior of high-entropy alloys.

Successive strain hardening mechanisms induced by transformation induced plasticity in Fe60Mn20Co10Cr10 high entropy alloys

Tianyu Gao et al.

Summary: This study investigated a TRIP high entropy alloy with samples obtained under different recrystallization conditions and HCP phase volume fractions through warm-rolling and subsequent annealing. These alloys exhibited a good combination of strength and ductility, showing sustainable strain hardening behavior. By reducing the stacking fault energy (SFE), the formation and overlapping of stacking faults through dislocation interaction were promoted, providing nucleation sites for HCP martensite and enhancing the strain hardening capacity during tension.

Deformation-induced crystalline-to-amorphous phase transformation in a CrMnFeCoNi high-entropy alloy

Hao Wang et al.

Summary: In situ straining transmission electron microscopy experiments on the Cantor high-entropy alloy (HEA) of CrMnFeCoNi demonstrate a crystalline-to-amorphous phase transformation in ultrafine-grained microstructures. The increase of crack-tip dislocation densities due to high lattice friction and grain boundary resistance triggers the transformation. The formation of amorphous nanobridges in the crack wake dissipates strain energies, providing effective toughening mechanisms for HEAs.
