Refining the Properties of Softwood Kraft Lignin with Acetone: Effect of Solvent Fractionation on the Thermomechanical Behavior of Electrospun Fibers

Muzaffer A. Karaaslan et al.

Summary: This study utilized acetone fractionation to improve the homogeneity of softwood kraft lignin and analyzed the molecular weight, chemical structure, thermal properties, and dynamic mechanical properties of the resulting fractions. Significant differences were observed between the two fractions, and fibers produced from these fractions showed improved characteristics.

Summary: This study successfully designed lignin-derived multifunctional bioadditives (TP-g-lignin) with tunable chemical compositions through graft polymerization, achieving a balanced combination of flame retardancy, UV resistance, and mechanical strength in PLA composites. The incorporation of 5.0 wt % of TP-g-lignin enabled PLA to meet the UL-94 V-0 industrial standard for flame retardancy, while also improving UV-shielding capability and increasing elastic modulus.

Laccase as a Tool in Building Advanced Lignin-Based Materials

Melissa B. Agustin et al.

Summary: Lignin is a promising renewable feedstock with potential as a substitute for fossil-based resources. The use of laccase in catalyzing lignin polymerization and depolymerization presents advantages in mild conditions and non-toxic chemicals, but also poses challenges due to its dual nature. Factors affecting laccase-catalyzed lignin polymerization have been summarized, and the conditions for producing novel lignin hybrids have been critically assessed. Industrial applications, challenges, and opportunities for laccase-assisted lignin valorization have been surveyed to understand the full potential of laccase in lignin-based materials for advanced applications.

On Laccase-Catalyzed Polymerization of Biorefinery Lignin Fractions and Alignment of Lignin Nanoparticles on the Nanocellulose Surface via One-Pot Water-Phase Synthesis

Luyao Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the structure-property-application relationship of lignin fractions derived from birch and spruce alkaline lignin after sequential solvent fractionation. It was found that lignin fractions with low molar mass exhibited higher polymerization degree due to more reactive phenolic-OH groups and better accessibility of lignin-laccase, compared to high molar mass fractions. Additionally, in situ polymerization of birch lignin fractions using microfibrillated cellulose as a template resulted in a dispersion of nanocellulose with lignin nanoparticles coated on its fiber network.
