Increases in groundwater arsenic concentrations and risk under decadal groundwater withdrawal in the lower reaches of the Yellow River basin, Henan Province, China

Wengeng Cao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the variations in groundwater arsenic concentrations in the North Henan Plain in China from 2010 to 2020 following extensive groundwater extractions. The findings suggest that high-arsenic groundwater is more likely to occur near paleochannels, which are rich in organic matter. Additionally, groundwater withdrawal over the past decade has led to an increase in both the proportion of high-arsenic groundwater and elevated arsenic concentrations. It has also caused a decrease in groundwater tables and the intrusion of high-arsenic groundwater into deeper aquifers, impacting groundwater flow dynamics.

Unraveling influences of nitrogen cycling on arsenic enrichment in groundwater from the Hetao Basin using geochemical and multi-isotopic approaches

Zhipeng Gao et al.

Summary: The origin and co-cycling of nitrogen species in arsenic-prone groundwater remain poorly understood, which could affect arsenic behavior. This study investigated the geochemical and multi-isotopic characteristics of groundwater in different redox environments to reveal the effects of nitrogen cycling on arsenic mobility.

Associations between inorganic arsenic in rice and groundwater arsenic in the Mekong Delta

Matthew C. Reid et al.

Summary: This study conducted a survey in the Mekong Delta and found no relationship between rice arsenic concentration and speciation with soil levels, but a strong correlation was observed between rice and groundwater arsenic concentrations. The study hypothesizes that surficial sediments with high concentrations of arsenic may serve as sources of arsenic to downgradient shallow aquifers.

High-Arsenic Groundwater in Paleochannels of the Lower Yellow River, China: Distribution and Genesis Mechanisms

Chuanshun Zhi et al.

Summary: High-arsenic groundwater poses a serious threat to human health, with concentrations exceeding 10μg/L in over 20% of samples in the lower Yellow River area. The distribution is mainly in Late Pleistocene-Holocene aquifers, with significantly higher concentrations in paleochannel systems. The main cause of As release is likely the reductive dissolution of As-bearing iron oxides.
