Is bigger always better? Designing economically feasible ocean thermal energy conversion systems using spatiotemporal resource data

Jannis Langer et al.

Summary: This paper examines the economically viable design approach for OTEC systems considering off-design conditions with seawater temperature variations. The model is validated with data from a power plant in Indonesia and shows that sizing systems based on worst-case thermal resources leads to the highest and steadiest electricity production. The study also highlights the importance of moderate temperature variations for achieving optimal economic performance in terms of the Levelized Cost of Electricity (LCOE).

Criteria for Optimal Site Selection for Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) Plants in Mexico

Erika Paola Garduno-Ruiz et al.

Summary: Sustainable energy globally is important, and OTEC can contribute to diversifying the energy matrix. This article proposes a method to identify optimal sites for OTEC deployment on the Mexican coastline, including evaluating thermal power potential, feasibility, site selection, and competitiveness with other technologies. The study identified Puerto Angel and Cabo San Lucas as the best sites, but further in situ studies on pilot plants are needed to assess their environmental impact and socio-economic consequences before larger-scale projects are implemented.

Plant siting and economic potential of ocean thermal energy conversion in Indonesia a novel GIS-based methodology

Jannis Langer et al.

Summary: Indonesia aims to achieve a 23% share of renewable energy by 2025, with Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) being considered as a potential contributor. The economic potential of OTEC depends on technical, economic, and natural variables, with the study proposing a novel methodology to assess this potential at different levels in Indonesia.

Off-design performance of closed OTEC cycles for power generation

Andrea Giostri et al.

Summary: The study presents a model to estimate the part-load performance of an ammonia closed OTEC system, accounting for off-design conditions in terms of variable seawater temperature and mass flow. The model predicts annual electricity yield and LCOE for a representative plant, with sensitivity analysis conducted to identify optimal design parameters for minimizing LCOE. The new design guarantees a reduction in LCOE and the developed model proves to be a valuable tool for estimating OTEC competitiveness in different scenarios.

Shifting wave energy perceptions: The case for wave energy converter (WEC) feasibility at milder resources

George Lavidas et al.

Summary: This study challenges the traditional focus on high resource areas for wave energy development, suggesting economic viability for moderate resources as well. Different types of wave converters are optimal for different zones, influencing the overall performance and cost-effectiveness of wave energy projects.
