Grounding transnational business governance: A political-strategic perspective on government responses in the Global South

Jose Carlos Marques et al.

Summary: Recent scholarship on transnational business governance highlights the political nature of public-private interactions and the contentious nature of these engagements. National political arenas and domestic distributional struggles play a significant role in shaping government responses to private transnational governance schemes and standards. Multiple empirical streams of research contribute to a political-strategic framework that focuses on Southern government responses and the impact of global value chains on understanding and reactions to transnational schemes and standards, providing a corrective to Northern bias in private governance literature.
