Antibiotic removal processes from water & wastewater for the protection of the aquatic environment-a review

Summary: This study focused on the adsorption of antibiotic contaminants levofloxacin (LVX) and gemifloxacin (GMX) from aqueous solutions using a granular silica pillared clay (GSPC). The GSPC exhibited high SiO2 content, superior pore structure, and effective mechanisms of adsorption such as hydrogen bonding, pi-pi interaction, and cation exchange. The higher adsorption capacity of GSPC towards GMX, attributed to NH2 groups and multilayer adsorption, enabled it to outperform LVX in a competitive adsorption scenario.
