Photochemical mineralization of amoxicillin medicinal product by means of UV, hydrogen peroxide, titanium dioxide and iron

Stavros G. Poulopoulos et al.

Summary: The study investigated the photochemical degradation of amoxicillin and total organic carbon (TOC) removal in pharmaceutical aqueous solutions using UV irradiation, titanium dioxide, hydrogen peroxide, and iron. It was found that adjusting the initial concentrations of amoxicillin, hydrogen peroxide, and ferric ions could achieve TOC removals above 90%. Additionally, the presence of even small amounts of Fe(III) substantially increased TOC removal rates, with Fe(III) accelerating the process dramatically in the first 60 minutes.

Advantageous roles of phosphate decorated octahedral CeO2 {111}/g-C3N4 in boosting photocatalytic CO2 reduction: Charge transfer bridge and Lewis basic site

Wanqin Li et al.

Summary: The P-CeO2/g-C3N4 photocatalyst coupling phosphate modified octahedral CeO2 {111} surface with gC(3)N(4) showed superior CO2 reduction activity due to efficient charge transfer and increased oxygen-containing functional groups on the surface. The interfacial electrons donated from g-C3N4 to CeO2 through the PO43- bridge led to Z-scheme formation, facilitating rapid photo-generated charge transfer and CO2 activation. This synergistic interaction of charge-transfer channel and abundant active sites makes P-CeO2/g-C3N4 a potential photocatalyst for CO2 reduction.

Fouling of TiO2 induced by natural organic matters during photocatalytic water treatment: Mechanisms and regeneration strategy

Xuejia Yang et al.

Summary: Photocatalysis using TiO2 has been studied extensively for pollutant removal, but the deactivation of the catalyst in the presence of humic acid (HA) was found to be significant. The adsorption of in-situ oxidized HA formed surface complexes with TiO2, blocking active sites and decreasing photogenerated charge transfer efficiency. Regeneration of deactivated TiO2 was also investigated.

Boron doping induced charge transfer switching of a C3N4/ZnO photocatalyst from Z-scheme to type II to enhance photocatalytic hydrogen production

Donghyung Kim et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated the switching of charge transfer mechanism from the Z-scheme to type II through simple boron doping of C3N4/ZnO. The introduction of low-electronegativity boron into C3N4 increased its Fermi level by 0.4 V, leading to a reversed band bending direction at the C3N4/ZnO junction. The resulting type II B-doped C3N4/ZnO showed a stable, drastic increase in photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate, approximately 2.9 times higher than undoped C3N4/ZnO.

Summary: This study compared the effectiveness of using RGO and GQDs as electron mediators in enhancing the photoelectrocatalytic hydrogen production of BiVO4/g-C3N4. It was found that incorporating GQDs led to significantly improved hydrogen performance, higher photocurrent density, and lower charge transfer resistance compared to RGO. The DFT analysis demonstrated that the enhanced performance with GQDs was due to better electronic cloud density sharing and charge redistribution at the heterostructure interface.

Mechanistic insight into the reaction pathway of peroxomonosulfate-initiated decomplexation of EDTA-NiII under alkaline conditions: Formation of high-valent Ni intermediate

Sheng Liang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the reaction mechanism of peroxomonosulfate (PMS) with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA)-NiII under alkaline conditions through experimental tests and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Experimental evidence shows that PMS can successfully decomplex EDTA-NiII and form Ni hydroxide precipitates at alkaline pH, leading to a significant reduction in aqueous Ni concentration. The proposed alternative reaction pathway suggests that NiII is attacked by PMS to produce high-valent Ni species, which further self-decomplex to NiIII hydroxides, indicating the involvement of NiIV species as a viable redox pathway promoting decomplexation.
