Gel-Derived Amorphous Bismuth-Nickel Alloy Promotes Electrocatalytic Nitrogen Fixation via Optimizing Nitrogen Adsorption and Activation

Zhiwei Fang et al.

Summary: This study developed a 3D amorphous BiNi alloy that significantly enhances the NRR efficiency compared to crystalline and metal counterparts. Ni alloying improves the chemisorption of nitrogen, resulting in higher NH3 production rate and Faradaic efficiency. The interconnected porous scaffold in the 3D alloy enables enhanced electron transfer and increased electrochemical surface area, making it efficient and stable for potential practical applications.

Single Atom Ruthenium-Doped CoP/CDs Nanosheets via Splicing of Carbon-Dots for Robust Hydrogen Production

Haoqiang Song et al.

Summary: This study introduces a composite material design with CoP nanoparticles doped with Ru single-atom sites supported on carbon dots (CDs) single-layer nanosheets, forming Ru1CoP/CDs. The catalyst shows high efficiency for the hydrogen evolution reaction over a wide pH range and excellent stability and activity. Through density functional theory calculations, it was revealed that the substituted Ru single atoms enhance catalytic performance by lowering the proton-coupled electron transfer energy barrier and promoting H-H bond formation. This research presents a new approach for developing carbon-based hybridization materials with integrated electrocatalytic performance for water splitting.

Nanomaterials for the electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction under ambient conditions

Juan Wen et al.

Summary: Ammonia has a wide range of daily applications as an important chemical product and carbon-free energy carrier. While the industrial synthesis method using the Haber-Bosch process meets production demands, its huge energy consumption and gas emission limit development. Therefore, the clean and sustainable electrocatalytic N-2 reduction reaction has attracted attention, but the chemical inertness of N-2 molecules poses challenges. Recent progress in low-dimensional nanocatalyst development, electronic control aspects in NRR electrocatalysts, theoretical mechanisms, reaction pathways, challenges and future prospects are discussed.

Computational Design of Single Mo Atom Anchored Defective Boron Phosphide Monolayer as a High-performance Electrocatalyst for the Nitrogen Reduction Reaction

Zaichun Liu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the potential electrocatalytic performance of single transition metal atoms embedded in monolayer defective boron phosphide for ambient NH(3) production. Among them, Mo/BP exhibited the best catalytic performance for the ambient reduction of N(2), indicating that Mo/BP is an efficient catalyst for N(2) fixation. This work opens up a new avenue for ambient NH(3) synthesis using designed single-atom electrocatalysts.
