One-step efficient non-hydrogen conversion of cellulose into γ-valerolactone over AgPW/CoNi@NG composite

Shanhui Zhu et al.

Summary: The efficient conversion of cellulose into value-added GVL is achieved by CoNi nanoparticles encapsulated in N-doped thin graphene shell combined with Ag+-exchanged heteropolyacid, achieving a high yield of 55.9%. The composite catalyst demonstrates high resistance to the corrosion of LA and FA, showing excellent catalytic stability. LA-adsorption FTIR spectra and DFT calculations suggest that FA can rapidly reduce LA due to its low dissociation energy barrier and high dissociation rate.

Catalytic waste Kraft lignin hydrodeoxygenation to liquid fuels over a hollow Ni-Fe catalyst

Xiaomeng Dou et al.

Summary: The depolymerization and demethoxylation of Kraft lignin (KL) was achieved using a novel H-NiFe2O4 catalyst under mild conditions, with high liquid product yield and minimal coke yield. The catalytic performance of H-NiFe2O4 benefits from the synergy of Ni and Fe, promoting lignin depolymerization while suppressing condensation reactions. Plausible reaction pathways of KL depolymerization over H-NiFe2O4 are discussed, demonstrating the potential of this catalytic system for efficient conversion of KL into liquid fuels.

Recent Advances of Catalysis in the Hydrogenation and Dehydrogenation of N-Heterocycles for Hydrogen Storage

Khai Chen Tan et al.

Summary: The lack of efficient hydrogen storage methods is a technical barrier in implementing hydrogen energy. Liquid organic hydrogen carriers, particularly N-heterocycles, show promise for both on-board and off-board hydrogen storage, but face kinetic barriers that require efficient catalysts for improvement.

Sustainable production of benzene from lignin

Qinglei Meng et al.

Summary: Efficient production of benzene from lignin is of great importance but has not been realized. In this study, a strategy is developed to transform lignin into benzene over RuW/zeolite catalyst in water, with a high yield of 18.8% on lignin weight basis. This high-performance protocol paves the way for efficiently producing benzene using lignin as the feedstock.

Techno-economic analysis and life cycle assessment of a biorefinery utilizing reductive catalytic fractionation

Andrew W. Bartling et al.

Summary: Reductive catalytic fractionation (RCF) is a promising method to fractionate lignocellulose and convert lignin to a narrow product slate. Analyses of techno-economic, life cycle assessment, and air emissions are crucial for guiding research towards commercialization, with a focus on cost and sustainability considerations.

Guidelines for performing lignin-first biorefining

Mahdi M. Abu-Omar et al.

Summary: The valorisation of lignin is crucial for the economic viability of the lignocellulosic biorefining industry. The lignin-first biorefining approach, which considers lignin valorisation in the design phase, has been shown to make the fullest use of lignocellulose. Despite the diverse approaches to reporting and analyzing results from lignin-first methods, we propose guidelines for analyzing critical data in order to facilitate direct comparisons between studies.
