inStrain profiles population microdiversity from metagenomic data and sensitively detects shared microbial strains

Matthew R. Olm et al.

Summary: The program inStrain is used to study genetic diversity in microbial populations, particularly in fecal metagenomes of newborn premature infants. Results show that siblings share more microbial strains compared to unrelated infants, and infants born via cesarean section harbor bacteria with higher nucleotide diversity than vaginally delivered infants, potentially due to hospital acquisition. InStrain can be applied to analyze microdiversity and strain comparison in any metagenomic dataset.

A system of coordinated autonomous robots for Lagrangian studies of microbes in the oceanic deep chlorophyll maximum

Yanwu Zhang et al.

Summary: The deep chlorophyll maximum (DCM) layer is an ecologically important feature of the open ocean that cannot be observed using aerial or satellite remote sensing. This study developed and applied a coordinated system of robots to study drifting planktonic biological communities within the ocean, providing fundamental characteristics of the in situ DCM microbial community autonomously in a manner not possible previously.

Individual Microcystis colonies harbour distinct bacterial communities that differ by Microcystis oligotype and with time

Derek J. Smith et al.

Summary: The interactions between bacteria and phytoplankton in the phycosphere play a role in the development of harmful algal blooms. Microcystis, a cyanobacterium, grows in colonies with other bacteria, but the taxonomic composition of these communities and their interactions are not well characterized. The composition of Microcystis phycosphere communities is influenced by physiological differences between Microcystis strains, temporal changes in strain phenotypes, and the composition of seeding communities.

The genetic and ecophysiological diversity of Microcystis

Gregory J. Dick et al.

Summary: In this study, the importance of diversity within Microcystis and the potential genetic and phenotypic traits that differentiate taxa are synthesized. Spatial and environmental patterns of Microcystis diversity, as well as evidence for cohesive groups within the genus, are briefly reviewed. Data on strain-level diversity in growth responses and variations in community interactions across strains are compiled and discussed to identify potential links and tradeoffs between traits.

The Lake Erie HABs Grab: A binational collaboration to characterize the western basin cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms at an unprecedented high-resolution spatial scale

Justin D. Chaffin et al.

Summary: Remote sensing allows for high-resolution monitoring of cyanobacterial bloom biomass in large lakes, but grab samples are still needed to monitor cyanobacterial toxins. Intensive grab sampling events were conducted in Lake Erie to estimate the total mass of microcystin during harmful algal blooms, revealing spatial heterogeneity and challenges for predictions. Models need to consider this spatial variability when forecasting microcystins.
