Synthesis of Linear Quantum Systems to Generate a Steady Thermal State

Shan Ma et al.

Summary: The purpose of this article is to synthesize a linear quantum system that is strictly stable and has a steady thermal state. The article presents a parameterization of a class of stable linear quantum systems and discusses the asymptotic evolution of the systems in two scenarios.

Direct coupling coherent quantum observers with discounted mean square performance criteria and penalized back-action

Igor G. Vladimirov et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the problem of quantum harmonic oscillators composed of a quantum plant and a coherent quantum observer. Utilizing discounted quadratic performance criteria and small-gain-theorem, the back-action of the observer on the covariance dynamics of the plant is bounded. A coherent quantum filtering problem is formulated to approximate the dynamic variables of the plant with the observer, and a penalty on the plant-observer coupling matrix is introduced to mitigate the back-action effect. The optimal conditions of the problem are derived and a homotopy method is outlined for a class of observers with autonomous estimation error dynamics. Numerical examples are provided to illustrate the computation of performance criteria and the synthesis of the observer.

Amplification of optical Schrodinger cat states with an implementation protocol based on a frequency comb

Hongbin Song et al.

Summary: In this paper, we propose and analyze a scheme to generate large-size Schrödinger cat states using linear operations of Fock states, squeezed vacuum states, and conditional measurements. By performing conditional measurements with photon number detectors, two unbalanced small-amplitude Schrödinger kitten states can be amplified to a large-size cat state with the same parity. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme achieves high fidelity for generating large-size cat states.

Linear open quantum systems with passive Hamiltonians and a single local dissipative process

Shan Ma et al.

Summary: The discussion focuses on linear open quantum systems with passive Hamiltonians and a single, local dissipative process, which are generally easier to implement than systems with active Hamiltonians and non-local dissipative processes. It also introduces the parameterization of all covariance matrices corresponding to pure Gaussian steady states achievable by this type of quantum system, as well as the parametrization of the corresponding linear quantum systems that can generate these pure states.

Unifying theory of quantum state estimation using past and future information

Areeya Chantasri et al.

Summary: Quantum state estimation for continuously monitored dynamical systems involves assigning a quantum state to an individual system based on continuous observations. By integrating past and future information, a framework for partially observed quantum systems with continuous monitoring was proposed, along with the definition of new cost functions and types of estimators to bridge existing approaches.

Design of a Discrete-Time Fault-Tolerant Quantum Filter and Fault Detector

Qing Gao et al.

Summary: This paper presents a solution to the problem of discrete-time fault-tolerant quantum filtering for a class of laser-atom open quantum systems, demonstrating the simultaneous determination of optimal estimates of both the atomic observables and the classical fault process using recursive quantum stochastic difference equations. A dispersive interaction quantum system example is used to illustrate the proposed filtering approach.

Circuit quantum electrodynamics

Alexandre Blais et al.

Summary: Circuit quantum electrodynamics (QED) is an independent and thriving field of research that allows unprecedented detailed study and control of light-matter interaction at the quantum level. It has become essential in current approaches to gate-based digital quantum information processing with superconducting circuits, and also provides a framework for the study of hybrid quantum systems. The coherent coupling of superconducting qubits to microwave photons, dispersive qubit readout, and different regimes of light-matter interaction are key aspects of circuit QED.

Direct observation of deterministic macroscopic entanglement

Shlomi Kotler et al.

Summary: In this study, two mechanical drumheads with masses of 70 picograms were deterministically entangled using pulsed electromechanics. Quantum state tomography was performed through nearly quantum-limited measurements, allowing for the direct observation of entanglement. These entangled macroscopic systems are expected to be used in fundamental tests of quantum mechanics, enable sensing beyond the standard quantum limit, and function as long-lived nodes in future quantum networks.

Quantum mechanics-free subsystem with mechanical oscillators

Laure Mercier de Lepinay et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates a method to measure an oscillator without quantum back-action by constructing an effective oscillator. By using two micromechanical oscillators, it was possible to achieve a quantum mechanics-free subsystem and measure two collective quadratures with an 8-decibel improvement while evading quantum back-action. The direct verification of quantum entanglement of the two oscillators was also achieved by measuring the Duan quantity 1.4 decibels below the separability bound.

Dynamical Backaction Magnomechanics

C. A. Potts et al.

Summary: Dynamical backaction from radiation pressure in optomechanical systems can manipulate mechanical vibrations, such as cooling resonators, driving phonon lasing, generating entangled states, and observing the optical-spring effect. In some magnetic materials, magnon-induced dynamical backaction interacts with mechanical vibrations. These effects may play a crucial role in future experimental work.

Direct approach to realizing quantum filters for high-precision measurements

Joe Bentley et al.

Summary: Quantum noise imposes a fundamental limit on the sensitivity of high-precision measurements, which can be suppressed through the use of nonclassical states and quantum filters. Researchers have discovered a method to directly implement quantum filters from their frequency-domain transfer functions, allowing for the construction of counterintuitive quantum filters and the systematic design of optimal quantum measurement devices. As demonstrated, an optical realization of an active unstable filter with anomalous dispersion has been proposed to enhance the quantum-limited sensitivity of gravitational-wave detectors.
