Effects of back-support exoskeleton use on gait performance and stability during level walking

Jang-Ho Park et al.

Summary: This study quantified the effects of wearing a passive BSE with different levels of supportive torque on gait performance and stability during level walking. The results showed that the external torque of the BSE may adversely affect gait step width, variability, and dynamic stability. This is significant for better design and practice guidelines to facilitate the safe adoption of BSEs in the workplace.

Effects of industrial back-support exoskeletons on body loading and user experience: an updated systematic review

Tjasa Kermavnar et al.

Summary: This study presents an updated systematic review of recent studies on industrial back-support exoskeletons, revealing their efficiency in reducing back-load and pointing out the need for further research in real work situations. The results indicate improvements in user endurance during lifting and static bending tasks, but a decline in performance during tasks requiring increased agility. Some side effects, such as increased abdominal/lower-limb muscle activity and changes in joint angles, were observed. Future field studies involving industrial workers are recommended to provide more comprehensive insights.

Muscle- and Region-Specific Associations Between Muscle Size and Muscular Strength During Hip Extension and Knee Flexion in the Hamstrings

Raki Kawama et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between the size of different regions of individual hamstring muscles and muscular strength during hip extension and knee flexion. The results showed that the anatomical cross-sectional areas of the distal regions in biceps femoris long head and semitendinosus were significantly correlated with hip-extension strength, while those of biceps femoris short head and semimembranosus were closely associated with knee-flexion strength.

Investigating the effect of a passive trunk exoskeleton on local discomfort, perceived effort and spatial distribution of back muscles activity

Ambra Giustetto et al.

Summary: This study found that passive exoskeletons are effective in reducing back load but can increase discomfort in non-targeted areas. Despite the reduction in back muscle activity, this may lead to an increase in perceived effort.
