Vegan diet in young children remodels metabolism and challenges the statuses of essential nutrients

Topi Hovinen et al.

Summary: A study found that vegan children's vitamin A and D status need special attention, and dietary recommendations for children cannot simply be extrapolated from adult studies. Meanwhile, longitudinal studies on infant-onset vegan diets are necessary.

Microbiome connections with host metabolism and habitual diet from 1,098 deeply phenotyped individuals

Summary: The gut microbiome is influenced by diet and has significant associations with nutrients, foods, and overall dietary habits, impacting host metabolism and cardiovascular disease risk. Certain microbial species are indicators of favorable postprandial glucose metabolism, while overall microbiome composition can predict a range of cardiometabolic blood markers.

Proactive conservation to prevent habitat losses to agricultural expansion

David R. Williams et al.

Summary: The projected loss of natural ecosystems for agricultural expansion will greatly threaten biodiversity, with almost 90% of terrestrial vertebrate species losing habitat. Proactive food policies could help reduce these threats and promote healthier human diets.

Micronutrient gaps during the complementary feeding period in 6 countries in Eastern and Southern Africa: a Comprehensive Nutrient Gap Assessment

Jessica M. White et al.

Summary: Insufficient quantity and inadequate quality of foods in early life are key causes of all forms of malnutrition. Identification of nutrient and dietary gaps in the diets of infants and young children is essential to inform policies and programs designed to improve child diets. The study in six countries in Eastern and Southern Africa identified important gaps in iron, vitamin A, zinc, and calcium, as well as vitamin B-12 and folate. The best whole-food sources of these micronutrients available in part or all of the countries studied include beef liver, chicken liver, small dried fish, beef, and eggs. Investment is needed in many countries to collect data on micronutrient biomarkers and dietary intake, in order to accelerate progress on improving the diets of infants and young children.

Micronutrient gaps during the complementary feeding period in South Asia: A Comprehensive Nutrient Gap Assessment

Ty Beal et al.

Summary: Micronutrient malnutrition is a significant driver of morbidity and mortality in children in South Asia, with important gaps identified in iron, zinc, vitamin A, and other micronutrients. Investment in data collection and a food systems approach are essential to improve child nutrition and reduce malnutrition in the region.

Building consensus on water use assessment of livestock production systems and supply chains: Outcome and recommendations from the FAO LEAP Partnership

Anne-Marie Boulay et al.

Summary: The FAO LEAP Partnership TAG developed guidelines on water footprinting for livestock production systems and supply chains to monitor environmental performance and progress. The recommended guidelines address impact assessment and water productivity to provide a comprehensive assessment of water use in livestock systems. The approach combines water productivity and water scarcity footprint metrics to assess potential productivity improvements and minimize environmental impacts related to water scarcity.

Reframing Nutritional Microbiota Studies To Reflect an Inherent Metabolic Flexibility of the Human Gut: a Narrative Review Focusing on High-Fat Diets

Jonathan Sholl et al.

Summary: The article discusses the harmful effects of high-fat diets on human health and the adaptability of the gut microbiota to various food sources. It suggests that well-formulated high-fat diets, such as ketogenic diets, may provide beneficial fuel sources for the gut and addresses concerns over high-fat diets in cancer research.

Lifetime Climate Impacts of Diet Transitions: A Novel Climate Change Accounting Perspective

Jonathan E. Barnsley et al.

Summary: This study uses New Zealand food consumption as a case study to explore the cumulative climate impact of adopting national dietary guidelines and substituting meat from hypothetical diets. The results show that transitioning to a hypothetical dietary guideline diet can reduce diet-related cumulative warming by 7 to 9%, while substituting meat items can further reduce it by 12% to 15%. However, the substitution of meat items results in characteristic nutrient differences that must be considered alongside changes in emission profiles.

Use of the DELTA Model to Understand the Food System and Global Nutrition

Nick W. Smith et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the nutrient adequacy of current and proposed global food systems using the DELTA Model. Results showed that various scenarios, including increasing production, reducing waste, and transitioning to plant-based systems, fell short of meeting requirements for multiple nutrients. Therefore, a balanced approach in designing future food systems is necessary to ensure global nutrition.

Global greenhouse gas emissions from animal-based foods are twice those of plant-based foods

Xiaoming Xu et al.

Summary: This study provides a detailed account of greenhouse gas emissions from plant- and animal-based foods worldwide, with agriculture and land use identified as major sources of emissions. Rice and beef were found to be the largest contributing commodities, with global emissions primarily coming from the production of animal-based food.
