Circular Polarization of Luminescence as a Tool To Study Molecular Dynamical Processes

Stefan C. J. Meskers

Summary: Circular polarization of luminescence is observed in chiral molecules, molecular aggregates, and molecular materials. Recent experimental results show that electroluminescence from chiral molecular materials can achieve nearly complete circular polarization. A comprehensive description of the origin of circular polarization is still missing, but quantum field theory may provide some clues for understanding this phenomenon.

Cyclodextrins with Multiple Pyrenyl Groups: An Approach to Organic Molecules Exhibiting Bright Excimer Circularly Polarized Luminescence

Hajime Shigemitsu et al.

Summary: A simple and effective approach to organic molecules exhibiting bright circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) was reported by combining a chiral cyclic molecular scaffold and multiple excimer-enabling moieties. The resulting pyrene-cyclodextrins (PCDs) displayed high molar extinction coefficients, polarized emission, and quantum yield, leading to a brightness of 340 M-1 cm(-1) for CPL. Formation of a pyrene excimer in a spatially crowded environment was found to be crucial for CPL anisotropy.

Quantifying the Overall Efficiency of Circularly Polarized Emitters

Lorenzo Arrico et al.

Summary: This study introduces a new concept of CPL brightness (B-CPL), which takes into consideration the absorption extinction coefficient and quantum yield in addition to the g(lum) factor, to comprehensively evaluate the efficiency of CPL emitters. By calculating B-CPL values for over 180 compounds and analyzing the data distribution for main classes of CPL molecular emitters, this tool can aid in contextualizing new CPL active compounds and guiding the selection of molecular systems for specific CPL applications.

2-(Dimesitylboryl)phenyl-Substituted [2.2]Paracyclophanes Featuring Intense and Sign-Invertible Circularly Polarized Luminescence

Meng-Yuan Zhang et al.

Summary: We have reported a new type of [2.2]paracyclophanes with high fluorescence efficiency and luminescence dissymmetry, showing intense circularly polarized luminescence. The solvent-induced CPL sign inversion is observed in pseudo-meta derivatives due to solvent-dependent excited-state dynamics.

Chiroptical Properties of Symmetric Double, Triple, and Multiple Helicenes

Tadashi Mori

Summary: This review focuses on the chiroptical properties of multiple helicenes, with an emphasis on the impact of the arrangement of multiple helices on the chiroptical responses. Although the number of multiple helicenes reported is limited, insights into the design principle for advanced chiroptical materials through the proper arrangement of multiple helices are provided.

Small Figure-Eight Luminophores: Double-Twisted Tethered Cyclic Binaphthyls Boost Circularly Polarized Luminescence

Yuki Nojima et al.

Summary: This study synthesized double-twisted cyclic binaphthyls with a tightly constrained stereogenic figure-eight geometry. X-ray analysis and DFT calculations revealed that short linkage forces a small dihedral angle between two naphthalenes, resulting in increased g(lum) values in CPL. Experimental findings were in line with TD-DFT calculations, indicating transannular interactions and extensive delocalization in the figure-eight pi-core, leading to elongation of the magnetic transition dipole moment and significant increases in g(lum) values.

Pathways to increase the dissymmetry in the interaction of chiral light and chiral molecules

Jake L. Greenfield et al.

Summary: The dissymmetric interaction between circularly polarised light and chiral molecules is important across various fields, but the selectivity in absorption or emission of left-handed versus right-handed CP light is often low. Strategies to enhance this interaction include molecular design, modification of light, and creating macroscopic chiral structures, offering hope for advancements in research involving interactions of chiral molecules and light.
