Circular Polarization of Luminescence as a Tool To Study Molecular Dynamical Processes

Stefan C. J. Meskers

Summary: Circular polarization of luminescence is observed in chiral molecules, molecular aggregates, and molecular materials. Recent experimental results show that electroluminescence from chiral molecular materials can achieve nearly complete circular polarization. A comprehensive description of the origin of circular polarization is still missing, but quantum field theory may provide some clues for understanding this phenomenon.

Mapping the broadband circular dichroism of copolymer films with supramolecular chirality in time and space

Marius Morgenroth et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates 100-femtosecond time-resolved CD mapping of polyfluorene copolymer thin films, revealing a supramolecular origin of their chiroptical response. The approach simultaneously tracks changes in CD and absorption response, providing detailed insights into electronic relaxation processes in chiral systems. The transient CD signal from the supramolecular response allows for quantification of singlet-singlet annihilation and charge-pair formation processes, while spatial mapping of chiral domains with a resolution of 50 μm is achieved on femtosecond time scales.

Ultrafast excited-state dynamics of thin films consisting of helicene-like molecules based on dibenzo[c,h]acridine

Marius Morgenroth et al.

Summary: The excited-state dynamics of bridged and non-bridged chiral helicene-like bidibenzo[c,h]acridines deposited as a thin film were investigated. Photoexcitation at 370 nm populates the S-1 state, with internal conversion and intersystem crossing being the main decay pathways. Despite high excitation fluence, there were no indications for higher-order processes, and coherent acoustic phonons were observed in the films post photoexcitation.

Strongly Circularly Polarized Crystalline and β-Phase Emission from Poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene)-Based Deep-Blue Light-Emitting Diodes

Li Wan et al.

Summary: This article presents highly efficient circularly polarized polymer light-emitting diodes (CP-PLEDs) for deep-blue emission by blending achiral luminescent polymer with helically chiral molecules. State-of-the-art device performance was achieved with different phase structures, showcasing high current efficiency and emission dissymmetry. The study provides insight into mechanisms underlying strong circularly polarized emission from excitonically coupled polymer chains in solid-state devices.
