Phosphorus-Containing Superbases: Recent Progress in the Chemistry of Electron-Abundant Phosphines and Phosphazenes

Robin F. Weitkamp et al.

Summary: The renaissance of Bronsted superbases is based on their ability to undergo various chemical transformations under mild conditions. Four major factors can be adjusted to tune their basicity selectively, including the nature of the basic center, electron donation by substituents, charge delocalization, and energy gain by hydrogen bonding. The appearance of neutral electron-rich phosphine and phosphazene bases in literature over the past decades has made them indispensable as auxiliary bases in deprotonation processes. Their applications in catalysis and coordination chemistry have also gained widespread interest.

Multistimuli-Responsive [3]Dioxaphosphaferrocenophanes with Orthogonal Switches

Bernhard S. Birenheide et al.

Summary: Novel multistimuli-responsive phosphine ligands with a redox-active structure capable of switching by protonation have been reported. The experimental results demonstrate the sensitivity of the system to protonation and metal coordination, and show a significant influence on reactivity and/or selectivity in Rh-catalysed hydrosilylations.

Towards the rational design of ylide-substituted phosphines for gold(i)-catalysis: from inactive to ppm-level catalysis

Jens Handelmann et al.

Summary: By studying the impact of substituents in ylide-substituted phosphines, it was found that introducing bulky aryl groups with ortho-substituents can significantly enhance the catalytic activity of gold complexes in reactions, not due to increased steric demand, but because of steric protection of the reactive ylidic carbon center. The designed mesityl-substituted YPhos ligand showed high catalyst stability and achieved high turnover numbers in various reactions.

Phosphorus-ylides: powerful substituents for the stabilization of reactive main group compounds

Abir Sarbajna et al.

Summary: Phosphorus ylides are 1,2-dipolar compounds with a negative charge on the carbon atom, making them ideal for stabilizing reactive compounds and tailoring the properties and reactivities of main group elements. Their potential is demonstrated by impressive examples of isolated compounds, paving the way for future research directions.
