Semiconducting Polymers for Oxygen Evolution Reaction under Light Illumination

Yuanxing Fang et al.

Summary: This review focuses on the photocatalytic technologies and materials of polymeric photocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Two practical systems, namely particle suspension and film-based photoelectrochemical systems, are discussed. The concept is reviewed in terms of thermodynamics and kinetics, and the key characteristics of polymeric photocatalysts, such as light absorption, charge separation and transfer, and surface oxidation reactions, are examined. Satisfactory OER performance by polymeric photocatalysts could lead to cost-effective, sustainable, and renewable water splitting and other advanced applications using solar energy.

One-Pot Synthesis of CoS2 Merged in Polymeric Carbon Nitride Films for Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting

Xiaochun Li et al.

Summary: Polymeric carbon nitride (PCN) is a sustainable, metal-free semiconductor that has been studied for its potential in photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. However, the amorphous nature of the polymer limits the charge transfer along the films, thus affecting its performance. In this study, the researchers successfully incorporated gradient concentration of cobalt disulfide (CoS2) into PCN films, resulting in improved charge transfer and enhanced performance for PEC water oxidation.

Unraveling fundamental active units in carbon nitride for photocatalytic oxidation reactions

Chaofeng Huang et al.

Summary: By synthesizing CN with more detailed molecular structures, we clarified the fundamental active units in photocatalysis, with M1 responsible for light absorption and M2 for charge separation. Additionally, oxygen molecules were found to participate in the photoexcited processes. As a result, this CN showed higher activity, up to 8 times that of traditional bulk CN for photocatalytic oxidation.

Carbon Nitride-Based Photoanode with Enhanced Photostability and Water Oxidation Kinetics

Neeta Karjule et al.

Summary: By optimizing the charge separation and transfer process within carbon nitride layers, a highly active oxygen evolution reaction catalyst Ni/Fe-MIL-53 is deposited, along with reduced graphene oxide as an electron acceptor. This approach results in a uniform distribution of active catalysts on the CN surface, achieving high OER catalytic activity and long-term stability.

Surface-Modified Ta3N5 Photoanodes for Sunlight-Driven Overall Water Splitting by Photoelectrochemical Cells

Tomohiro Higashi et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that surface modification of Ta3N5 photoanodes with NiFeOx significantly enhances the water splitting efficiency of PEC cells. A PEC cell constructed with NiFeOx/Ta3N5 photoanode and LTCA:Al photocathode achieves stoichiometric hydrogen and oxygen generation from water splitting without the need for an external bias voltage.
