Discovering the landscape of protein modifications

Keith E. Keenan et al.

Summary: Protein modifications play a significant role in cell biology across various organisms. Discoveries in the early 20th century challenged traditional definitions of amino acids, and the advent of mass-spectrometry-based proteomics in the latter part led to a rapid increase in known protein modifications, with over 500 identified today. New computational tools in data science, machine learning, and artificial intelligence are expected to further advance the discovery and understanding of protein modifications in the future.

The changing landscape of atherosclerosis

Peter Libby

Summary: Emerging evidence has led to a significant evolution of concepts related to atherosclerosis, with a shifting risk profile that is no longer limited to specific regions or demographics. Recent research has highlighted new risk factors and mechanisms underlying atherosclerosis, opening doors to potential therapeutic interventions for this widespread disease.

Targeting inflammation in atherosclerosis - from experimental insights to the clinic

Oliver Soehnlein et al.

Summary: Inflammation plays a substantial role in atherosclerosis and targeting inflammatory pathways could provide a promising new avenue to prevent and treat the disease. Clinical studies have shown that modulation of inflammation can help prevent the clinical complications of atherosclerosis. Refining strategies for combatting inflammation in the disease is crucial for further progress in managing atherosclerotic risk.

Cardiovascular disease in diabetes, beyond glucose

Robert H. Eckel et al.

Summary: Despite the long-standing knowledge that diabetes is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, the precise reasons for this association are only partially understood. Lipids and other risk factors are important in diabetes-related cardiovascular complications, while the role of glucose remains unclear. Research has shown that factors beyond hyperglycemia may be responsible for the increased cardiovascular disease risk in individuals with diabetes.

Triglycerides and Residual Atherosclerotic Risk

Sergio Raposeiras-Roubin et al.

Summary: The study found that elevated triglycerides are associated with subclinical atherosclerosis and vascular inflammation even when LDL-C levels are normal. For individuals with low to moderate cardiovascular risk, high triglyceride levels may be a risk factor for underlying atherosclerosis.
