Outdoor disinfectant sprays for the prevention of COVID-19: Are they safe for the environment?

Sivakumar Subpiramaniyam

Summary: The World Health Organization recommends the use of hydrogen peroxide and hypochlorite-based disinfectants to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 in healthcare settings, but these may be toxic to aquatic non-target organisms. Studies show that the toxicities of these disinfectants can pose a danger to the environment, calling for the development of new strategies to prevent harm to non-target organisms.
