Surgery Clerkship Curriculum Changes at an Academic Institution during the COVID-19 Pandemic

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has led to the suspension of surgical clerkships for third-year medical students globally, prompting rapid adaptation by educators and students. The University of California, San Francisco Department of Surgery has developed a surgically focused extended mastery learning rotation to help students consolidate foundational science knowledge before returning to clinical medicine. Further studies are needed to evaluate the effectiveness of this new approach.
