Neutrophils in cancer: heterogeneous and multifaceted

Catherine C. Hedrick et al.

Summary: Neutrophils have emerged as important regulators of cancer, revealing their diverse and plastic contributions in tumor development and growth, influencing positively and negatively depending on time, place, and disease context. Their functional importance in cancer has been overlooked due to their short-lived, terminally differentiated, and non-proliferative characteristics, but recent studies have led to a paradigm shift in understanding their roles.

Updates in the cause of sinonasal inverted papilloma and malignant transformation to squamous cell carcinoma

Charles C. L. Tong et al.

Summary: Sinonasal inverted papilloma is a benign tumor with potential for malignant transformation, with unclear etiology possibly involving HPV infection and EGFR mutations. Recent studies have shown the usefulness of advanced genomics techniques in detecting HPV viral signatures and relevant genes in the malignant transformation of sinonasal tumors.

Presence of Tertiary Lymphoid Organ in Nasal Inverted Papilloma Is Correlated with Eosinophil Infiltration and Local Immunoglobulin Production

Qing Bao et al.

Summary: The study found that TLOs were present in 54% of NIP patients, composed of T cells, B cells, follicular dendritic cells, macrophages, and natural killer cells. Tissues with TLOs showed higher eosinophil infiltration levels, upregulation of lymphorganogenic genes and cytokines, as well as increased Th17 and Th2 cytokine production. Additionally, NIP with TLOs demonstrated a higher number of follicular T helper cells and immunoglobulin-producing plasma cells, which were positively correlated with eosinophil numbers.

TP53 mutations and CDKN2A mutations/deletions are highly recurrent molecular alterations in the malignant progression of sinonasal papillomas

Noah A. Brown et al.

Summary: Sinonasal papillomas are benign epithelial tumors of the sinonasal tract. Mutually exclusive EGFR mutations and HPV infection are found in inverted sinonasal papillomas, while KRAS mutations are frequent in oncocytic sinonasal papillomas. Sinonasal papilloma-associated sinonasal carcinomas have distinct molecular features from aerodigestive tract squamous cell carcinoma, including more frequent EGFR, KRAS, and CDKN2A mutations. These molecular findings may have important implications for diagnosis and treatment of advanced sinonasal cancer.

Abnormal Expression of YAP Is Associated With Proliferation, Differentiation, Neutrophil Infiltration, and Adverse Outcome in Patients With Nasal Inverted Papilloma

Tian Yuan et al.

Summary: The study revealed that YAP expression was significantly higher in the NIP group compared to the NP group and control group, with higher grade of epithelial remodeling associated with increased YAP-induced proliferation and decreased ciliated and goblet cells. Furthermore, YAP expression was positively correlated with proliferation, neutrophil infiltration, and adverse clinical outcomes in NIP patients.

Overexpression of Neutrophil MMP-9 and HIF-1α May Contribute to the Finger-Like Projections Formation and Histo-Pathogenesis in Nasal Inverted Papilloma

Tao Li et al.

Summary: Inverted nasal papilloma (NIP) is characterized by its unique histological features, including finger-like projections inserting into the epithelium. Neutrophils play a vital role in NIP, releasing MMP-9 and HIF-1 alpha which contribute to the epithelial changes and pathogenesis of NIP. Neutrophils were found to cluster at the finger-like projections in NIP tissue and express MMP-9 and HIF-1 alpha, highlighting their significance in the pathological process.

YAP/TAZ Transcriptional Coactivators Create Therapeutic Vulnerability to Verteporfin in EGFR-mutant Glioblastoma

Krishanthan Vigneswaran et al.

Summary: The study reveals that YAP and TAZ are highly expressed in EGFR-amplified/mutant human GBMs, leading to the survival and proliferation of tumor cells. The benzoporphyrin derivative verteporfin induces apoptosis of EGFR-amplified/mutant GBM cells and shows significant efficacy in inhibiting tumor growth.
