Antimicrobial stewardship: Attitudes and practices of healthcare providers in selected health facilities in Uganda

Summary: In healthcare facilities in Uganda, the majority of healthcare providers have a positive attitude and fair practice towards antimicrobial stewardship. Being female and having a bachelor's or master's degree are significant predictors of a positive attitude. However, healthcare providers in the western region's health facilities are less likely to have a positive practice towards antimicrobial stewardship.

Summary: Nurses play a role in antimicrobial stewardship by supporting system processes, monitoring safety and optimal antibiotic use, and patient education. However, lack of clear articulation of their role and traditional hierarchies limit active participation. Inconsistent engagement is perceived as due to a failure to prioritize antimicrobial stewardship activities, lack of formal policies, and a need for further education.

An international inventory of antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) training programmes for AMS teams

Summary: This study identified 48 unique AMS training programmes globally through online survey and search, with less than half of respondents aware of available AMS programmes. Pharmacists showed higher awareness compared to medical doctors and other professionals. Most AMS training programmes were delivered online and targeted medical doctors. The main barriers to participation were training costs and lack of recognition by health professional societies.
