Recurrent delirium over 12 months predicts dementia: results of the Delirium and Cognitive Impact in Dementia (DECIDE) study

Sarah J. Richardson et al.

Summary: This study found that delirium is associated with cognitive decline and an increased risk of new dementia diagnosis, with more episodes and longer duration of delirium leading to worse cognitive outcomes. Delirium may be a modifiable risk factor for dementia and preventive measures could potentially reduce the risk of future cognitive decline and dementia.

Delirium in older adults is associated with development of new dementia: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Jarett Vanz-Brian Pereira et al.

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis found that older adult inpatients who develop delirium have a significantly higher risk of subsequently developing dementia. Further research in different patient populations and exploring the impact of delirium duration, severity, and subtype on dementia development is needed.
