Health-related quality of life is dynamic in alcohol hepatitis and responds to improvement in liver disease and reduced alcohol consumption

Abhishek Madathanapalli et al.

Summary: The impact of alcoholic hepatitis (AH) and heavy drinking on health-related quality of life (HRQOL) was investigated, showing that lower baseline HRQOL is associated with higher 30-day mortality independent of Model for End-stage Liver Disease (MELD) score. Over time, HRQOL improved with the greatest gains observed in individuals with improved MELD scores and those who were abstinent.

Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Hospitalizations for Alcoholic Hepatitis or Cirrhosis in Alberta, Canada

Abdel Aziz Shaheen et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of COVID-19 restrictions on hospitalizations of patients with alcoholic and nonalcoholic cirrhosis as well as alcoholic hepatitis (AH) in Alberta, Canada. The study found that monthly admission rates for alcoholic and nonalcoholic cirrhosis remained stable before and during COVID-19, but there was a significant increase in admissions for alcoholic hepatitis.

Summary: Alcohol consumption increased during the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States, leading to a projected increase in alcohol-related liver disease (ALD) and mortality. The long-term consequences of increased alcohol consumption highlighted the importance of informed decision-making by individuals and policymakers to mitigate the impact of high-risk alcohol drinking.

Circulating Extracellular Vesicles Carrying Sphingolipid Cargo for the Diagnosis and Dynamic Risk Profiling of Alcoholic Hepatitis

Tejasav S. Sehrawat et al.

Summary: The study found that the plasma concentration of extracellular vesicles (EVs) was significantly higher in patients with alcoholic hepatitis (AH), and the sphingolipid content in EVs was significantly enriched in AH patients. EV concentration correlated with the Model for End-Stage Liver Disease score, and the sphingolipid components of EVs showed good performance as biomarkers for the diagnosis and prognosis of AH.

Liver transplantation for alcoholic hepatitis in the United States: Excellent outcomes with profound temporal and geographic variation in frequency

Thomas G. Cotter et al.

Summary: In the United States, the number of liver transplants for AH is rapidly increasing as the mortality from alcohol-associated liver disease rises. Patients undergoing AH liver transplantation tend to be younger with higher rates of complications, but the impact of AH recurrence on patient or graft survival remains unclear. There are significant geographic variations in practices among different regions.

Summary: The survey of hepatology and gastroenterology providers showed high rates of alcohol screening and referrals for behavioral therapy, but low rates of prescribing AUD pharmacotherapy due to knowledge gaps from insufficient education. Further studies are needed to improve provider alignment with best practices for treating patients with AUD and ALD.

Summary: This international multi-center cohort study found that corticosteroid treatment only improved 30-day survival in patients with severe alcohol-associated hepatitis (AH), particularly those with MELD scores between 25 and 39. There was no survival benefit observed in patients with MELD scores over 51.
