Age as a potential modulator of alcohol-related deficits

Sara Jo Nixon et al.

Summary: Although the individual significance of age, sex, and alcohol use disorder (AUD) is well-documented, their interaction effects have not been systematically investigated. This study extends prior research by examining the main and interaction effects of age on emotion processes and neuropsychological tests in AUD and community comparison (CC) groups. The analysis revealed significant interaction effects between age and emotion processing performance in the AUD group, but not in the CC group. However, sex did not reach significance in any of the analyses.

Megan E. Patrick et al.

Summary: This study examined changes in drinking trends among young and middle-aged adults in the United States before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. The results showed a decrease in alcohol use prevalence and an increase in daily alcohol use prevalence during 2020. There were also changes in alcohol use frequency and reasons. Among college students, there was a significant deviation from expected historical trends in alcohol use prevalence. Age and college status had a moderating effect on alcohol use patterns.

Association of Habitual Alcohol Intake With Risk of Cardiovascular Disease

Kiran J. Biddinger et al.

Summary: Observational studies have suggested cardiovascular benefits associated with light alcohol consumption, while genetic analyses have indicated a possible causal link between alcohol intake and increased cardiovascular disease risk. This cohort study using the UK Biobank examined the association of habitual alcohol intake with cardiovascular disease risk, showing that light to moderate alcohol consumption was associated with healthier lifestyle factors, but genetic predisposition to alcohol intake was associated with increased risk of hypertension and coronary artery disease across different levels of intake.
