The use of combined soil moisture data to characterize agricultural drought conditions and the relationship among different drought types in China

Keke Zhou et al.

Summary: Monitoring and assessing drought is crucial due to the costly damage it causes. This study evaluated the utility of combined satellite retrieved soil moisture products and the monthly scaled soil water deficit index in characterizing agricultural drought and investigating relationships among different types of drought. The results showed good performance of the drought index in detecting drought events and revealed the propagation time between meteorological, agricultural, and vegetation drought.

Regional variation of drought parameters and long-term trends over India using standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index

Animesh Choudhury et al.

Summary: Analyzing historical drought patterns in India revealed regional variations in drought characteristics, with the northern part experiencing frequent droughts at shorter timescales and the western and northeastern parts encountering frequent droughts at longer timescales. The study identified six homogeneous regions using the K-means clustering algorithm and analyzed different drought parameters for each cluster, highlighting the importance of region-specific understanding for preparing adaptive strategies against drought impacts.

Investigation about the correlation and propagation among meteorological, agricultural and groundwater droughts over humid and arid/semi-arid basins in China

Hao Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the correlation and propagation of meteorological, agricultural, and groundwater droughts in the Yangtze River Basin and Yellow River Basin in China. Results show different drought conditions and trends in the two basins, with the aggravation of groundwater drought in the Yellow River Basin. Groundwater extraction is identified as a major factor in worsening groundwater drought, contrasting with the main contributor to agricultural drought being the propagation of meteorological drought.

Spatial and temporal patterns of propagation from meteorological to hydrological droughts in Brazil

Alena G. Bevacqua et al.

Summary: This study characterized meteorological and hydrological droughts in 457 basins in Brazil using standardized indices, finding that hydrological droughts are usually more severe and have a longer recovery time compared to meteorological droughts. The most severe and long-lasting droughts are typically found in the driest regions or areas mainly impacted by human activities. Different approaches may result in slightly different propagation times.

Spatial-temporal dynamics of agricultural drought in the Loess Plateau under a changing environment: Characteristics and potential influencing factors

Zhiming Han et al.

Summary: This study investigates the spatial-temporal dynamics of agricultural drought in the Loess Plateau under global warming and regional vegetation restoration project. Results show that increasing precipitation has not alleviated agricultural drought, while increasing temperature is the direct factor inducing agricultural drought. Moreover, the implementation of vegetation restoration project further aggravates the risk of agricultural drought, providing valuable insights for understanding the impact of large-scale vegetation restoration projects.

Characterization of agricultural drought propagation over China based on bivariate probabilistic quantification

Yang Xu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the spatiotemporal variations of the propagation characteristics from meteorological drought to agricultural drought in China. Results show that the strongest correlation between meteorological and agricultural drought was in summer, with shorter propagation time, while the correlation and propagation sensitivity were greater in humid areas.

Role of hydrological model structure in the assimilation of soil moisture for streamflow prediction

A. K. Nayak et al.

Summary: Soil moisture data assimilation (SMDA) has been widely used in hydrological research to enhance streamflow prediction. Different conceptual hydrological model structures have varying impacts on the SMDA process, with the GR4J model performing best and the DB model performing worst in this study. Improvements in model performance were observed for some basins, but deterioration was also noted for others during assimilation.

Multi-timescale assessment of propagation thresholds from meteorological to hydrological drought

Jiefeng Wu et al.

Summary: Hydrological drought usually lags behind meteorological drought, and obtaining the propagation threshold (PT) is important for providing early warnings of hydrological drought. Different timescales and methods can lead to varying estimates of PT, with longer timescales corresponding to larger PT. The response sensitivities of drought indices at different timescales contribute to the differences in PT estimates.

Agricultural drought prediction in China based on drought propagation and large-scale drivers

Yu Zhang et al.

Summary: Agricultural drought, defined as a deficit in soil moisture affecting plant growth and crop yields, was predicted using the meta-Gaussian model based on initial soil moisture conditions, antecedent meteorological drought, and large-scale drivers in China. The prediction method performed well in semi-arid and sub-humid regions during spring, but not in humid regions during summer. Incorporating ENSO showed useful predictability for long lead time prediction in certain regions.

Characteristics and controls of solute transport under different conditions of soil texture and vegetation type in the waterewind erosion crisscross region of China's Loess Plateau

Yanwu Pei et al.

Summary: The study investigated the transport characteristics of Cl- in soils with different textures and vegetation types. Results showed that soil texture, vegetation type, and depth significantly influenced the transport characteristics of Cl-, with varying root biomass distributions affecting macropore numbers and preferential flow paths in soil. This research provides guidance for optimizing artificial vegetation configuration to reduce nutrient loss and enhance ecosystem functions in the northern Loess Plateau of China.
