Animal protein intake reduces risk of functional impairment and strength loss in older adults

Mengjie Yuan et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that increasing animal protein intake, enhancing physical activity levels, and increasing skeletal muscle mass are closely associated with reduced risks of functional impairment and greater preservation of grip strength in adults over 50 years old.

Summary: Exercise training has been shown to improve exercise capacity, reduce symptoms and enhance HRQoL in adults with COPD. Alternative modes of exercise training such as HIIT, aquatic therapy, tai chi and neuromuscular electrical stimulation are emerging as effective interventions for improving exercise outcomes in this population.

The effect of daily protein supplementation, with or without resistance training for 1 year, on muscle size, strength, and function in healthy older adults: A randomized controlled trial

Kenneth H. Mertz et al.

Summary: Protein supplementation alone was found to be ineffective in improving muscle mass and strength in healthy older adults, while heavy-resistance training combined with whey protein supplementation proved to be the most effective intervention for preserving muscle mass and increasing strength. Additional strategies to improve long-term compliance to heavy resistance exercise in this population are recommended for future studies.

Relative sit-to-stand power cut-off points and their association with negatives outcomes in older adults

Ivan Baltasar-Fernandez et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the association of sit-to-stand power and body composition parameters with age, provide cut-off points for low relative sit-to-stand power, and assess the negative outcomes associated with low sit-to-stand power. The results showed a negative association of sit-to-stand power with age in both men and women, with low sit-to-stand power being linked to frailty, low habitual gait speed, disability in activities of daily living, and low quality of life in older adults.

Summary: The study found that supplementation with whey, soy, leucine, or creatine did not enhance the adaptations to resistance training in pre-frail and frail elderly individuals. However, resistance exercise itself increased muscle mass and function in all participants, with no adverse effects observed.

Summary: The study found that both low-speed and high-speed resistance training can reverse frailty status and improve physical performance in elderly individuals. While both types of training improved muscle strength and power, they showed different patterns of improvement, with low-speed resistance training being more effective in reversing frailty status.
