Spatiotemporal Variations in the Connectivity of Wetting and Nonwetting Phases during Water Alternating Gas injection

Eliza Ganguly et al.

Summary: The research focuses on quantifying the connectivity of wetting and nonwetting phases in porous media undergoing WAG injection, using statistical and computational functions. It provides new insights for improving oil recovery and optimizing injection strategies by analyzing the evolution of connectivity during each injection process.

No-Flow Fraction (NFF) Permeability Model for Rough Fractures Under Normal Stress

Hoda Javanmard et al.

Summary: The study investigates the relationship between fracture permeability and geometry under normal loads, finding that aperture roughness can increase with applied stresses. By introducing the No-Flow Fraction (NFF) parameter, a new Cubic-law-based permeability model is proposed to significantly improve accuracy in permeability estimations. The new models provide permeability estimates accurate to within a factor of 2 of simulated permeability in majority of deformed fractures, compared to previous models with typical deviations of at least one order of magnitude.

A Systematic Investigation Into the Control of Roughness on the Flow Properties of 3D-Printed Fractures

Tomos Phillips et al.

Summary: This study systematically examined the impact of roughness on fluid flow properties of fractures by 3D printing fractures with controlled surface roughness. The experiments showed that roughness enhances void space persistence and fluid flow, with rougher fractures exhibiting significant permeability increases. Below 20 micrometers, fracture contact area was found to be a better predictor of permeability than roughness. Such findings are crucial for models predicting fracture flow in the deep subsurface.

Effect of geological heterogeneities on reservoir storage capacity and migration of CO2 plume in a deep saline fractured carbonate aquifer

M. Adeel Sohal et al.

Summary: The study investigates the impact of geological heterogeneities on reservoir storage capacity and CO2 plume migration in the Hontomn deep saline aquifer. Long-term simulations of CO2 injection in the fractured carbonate reservoir show significant influence of matrix and porosity heterogeneities on storage capacity. Gas migration is affected by heterogeneities, with higher gas saturation observed in heterogeneous cases compared to homogeneous ones.
