An Algorithm for Selecting Spatially Correlated Ground Motions at Multiple Sites under Scenario Earthquakes

Wenqi Du et al.

Summary: This paper presents an algorithm for selecting ground motions from a database for multiple sites under earthquake scenarios. The algorithm constructs the target distribution of spectral accelerations at multiple sites by considering the spatial correlation of ground motions. It then randomly simulates response spectra and selects recorded ground motions that match the simulated spectra. Validation examples demonstrate that the selected ground motions realistically capture the target distribution of response spectra. The computational expense of the algorithm is found to be generally acceptable. The algorithm can be used for selecting ground motions as inputs for dynamic analysis of spatially distributed buildings.

A Simplified Framework for Seismic Fragility Assessment of Reinforced Concrete Columns under Different Failure Patterns

Chao-Lie Ning et al.

Summary: A simplified framework is proposed in this study to assess the seismic fragility curves of RC columns under different failure patterns in a unified manner. By simulating RC columns and compiling an experimental database, the seismic fragility curves of RC columns under different failure patterns are generated, and empirical equations are proposed to predict the seismic fragility parameters.

Reliability-based design optimization of adaptive sliding base isolation system for improving seismic performance of structures

Yongbo Peng et al.

Summary: The study proposes an efficient reliability-based design optimization scheme for base isolation systems by integrating the probability density evolution method and variance-based sensitivity analysis. Critical design parameters for optimization are identified through sensitivity analysis, with parameters associated with the sliding implant-magnetic bearing being of most concern. Genetic algorithm is employed for RBDO, showing a significant improvement in global reliability of the base-isolated structure post optimization.

Data-Driven Approach to Predict the Plastic Hinge Length of Reinforced Concrete Columns and Its Application

De-Cheng Feng et al.

Summary: The plastic hinge length is a key parameter in the inelastic response of reinforced concrete columns to combined axial and flexural loading. A novel data-driven model based on the AdaBoost algorithm is proposed to predict the plastic hinge length, showing considerably higher prediction accuracy compared to existing methods. Numerical experiments demonstrate that using the predicted plastic hinge length in force-based beam-column models closely resembles laboratory experiments.

Influence of ground motion duration on the seismic performance of earth slopes based on numerical analysis

Wei Wang et al.

Summary: This study quantitatively investigates the impact of duration on the seismic performance of a multi-layer earth slope, finding that longer-duration ground-motion suites can lead to an enlarged distribution of permanent slope displacements. It is important to pay attention to the duration effect of ground motions and properly constrain the duration characteristics of ground-motion records when assessing the seismic performance of earth slopes in applications.
