Safe, Scalable, Inexpensive, and Mild Nickel-Catalyzed Migita-Like C-S Cross-Couplings in Recyclable Water

Tzu-Yu Yu et al.

Summary: A new method of C-S coupling based on nickel catalysis in water with micellar catalysis has been reported, showing high isolated yields under mild conditions. It offers potential for scalability and low residual metal content, making it applicable to pharmaceutical synthesis targets. The associated low E Factor also suggests it may be a more attractive option compared to current methods using unsustainable Pd catalyst loadings.

The many flavours of mechanochemistry and its plausible conceptual underpinnings

Robert T. O'Neill et al.

Summary: Mechanochemistry involves diverse phenomena where mechanical load influences chemical reactions, such as motor protein function, organic synthesis in a ball mill, reactions at a propagating crack, chemical actuation, and polymer fragmentation. The rate of deformation in mechanochemistry affects which and how many bonds break, either powering macroscopic motion in otherwise endergonic reactions or being driven by spontaneous chemical reactions. The complexity of mechanochemistry lies in the dynamic coupling between inertial motion at the microscale and changes in chemical bonding across multiple length scales and timescales.

Tim Kohlmann et al.

Summary: The study explored static and dynamic quenching of pyrene by methyl viologen in sodium alkyl sulfate micelles of varying volumes. The results showed that under high concentrations of NaCl, a significant portion of viologen resided in the aqueous phase and quenched dynamically across the micelle-water interface. The aggregation numbers of micelles were found to be linearly dependent on the alkyl chain length and the temperature compared to the Krafft temperature.
