Variations in Electrochemical Characteristics of a Platinum Catalyst Enwrapped by a Carbon Shell According to Carbon Layer Thickness

Dohyeon Lee et al.

Summary: Enwrapping metal nanoparticles with a carbon shell is a promising method for enhancing the stability of metal catalysts. This study investigates the control of carbon shell thickness by partially oxidizing the carbon layer. The results show that the thickness and surface properties of the carbon layer depend on the oxygen concentration. Thin carbon shells enable Pt catalysts to maintain activity and stability, while reducing the activation time required for optimal performance.

Challenges in applying highly active Pt-based nanostructured catalysts for oxygen reduction reactions to fuel cell vehicles

Kensaku Kodama et al.

Summary: Progress has been made in the development of Pt-based nanocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction over the past 30 years, with some now in commercial production for PEFCs. However, further improvements in catalytic activity are needed. State-of-the-art catalysts have potential to enhance energy conversion efficiencies and reduce platinum usage in PEFCs, but technical challenges remain for their application in fuel cell vehicles, such as high power density, practical durability, and efficiency.

A target-customized carbon shell structure of carbon-encapsulated metal nanoparticles for fuel cell applications

Youngjin Kim et al.

Summary: The development of Pt-based alloy nanoparticles has improved fuel cell performance, but commercialization is limited due to stability issues. Carbon-encapsulated nanoparticles have been studied to enhance durability, with a focus on fine-tuning the carbon shell structure at the atomic scale. A bottom-up approach using minimal carbon sources from organic ligand decomposition has successfully produced Pt3Fe1 nanoparticles with ultrathin carbon shells, and modulating the pore structure of the shells at the sub-nm level through carbon etching has proven effective in achieving desired performance targets set by the US Department of Energy for 2025.
