Influence of synthesis strategy on the formation of microspheres of self-assembled CuO rectangular nanorods and hierarchical structures of self-assembled Cu2O nanospheres from single precursor (copper (II) acetate monohydrate) and their structural, optical, thermal and magnetic properties

Sumeet Kumar

Summary: In this study, microspheres of self-assembled CuO rectangular nanorods and hierarchical structures of self-assembled Cu2O nanospheres were successfully synthesized using hydrothermal method from a single precursor. The effects of NH3 and N2H4·H2O as reducing agents on the phases and morphology of CuO and Cu2O were investigated. The synthesized nanostructures were found to be single phase and highly crystalline, as confirmed by XRD patterns and Raman spectra. SEM and TEM imaging techniques revealed the different shapes and structures of the nanostructures, while FTIR and absorption spectra provided insights into the chemical and optical properties of the materials.

Cu2O/CuO heterojunction catalysts through atmospheric pressure plasma induced defect passivation

Avishek Dey et al.

Summary: A novel method using atmospheric pressure plasma jet (APPJ) was demonstrated to fabricate Cu2 0/CuO heterojunction electrodes with favorable band alignment, producing nanoscale CuO surface features with low density of interfacial defects. The electrode showed remarkable performance in oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The electronic structure modeling revealed shifts in band centers at the interface, contributing to increased catalytic activity of the heterostructure. The study highlighted the potential of APPJ functionalization in tuning surface electronic properties of copper oxide catalysts for enhanced efficiency in OER and HER water splitting.

Morphological and stoichiometric optimization of Cu2O thin films by deposition conditions and post-growth annealing

Medina Umar et al.

Summary: Thin films of copper oxide were grown using radio frequency-magnetron sputtering in an oxygen-argon environment onto silicon substrates, followed by post deposition annealing in vacuum at different temperatures. The study revealed that annealing in vacuum resulted in thin films with different morphological and stoichiometric properties. Additionally, the oxygen partial pressure during deposition affected the obtained oxide phases, with high pressure leading to the formation of two different oxide phases and low pressure leading to the formation of Cu2O thin films.
