Reproducibility in the fabrication and physics of moire materials

Chun Ning Lau et al.

Summary: Overlaying two atomic layers with a slight lattice mismatch or at a small rotation angle creates a moire superlattice, which has properties that are markedly modified from (and at times entirely absent in) the 'parent' materials. Moire materials have advanced the study and engineering of strongly correlated phenomena and topological systems in reduced dimensions. Understanding electronic phases like superconductivity necessitates precise control in fabrication, involving the rotational alignment of two atomically thin layers with high angular precision.

PdSe2/MoSe2 vertical heterojunction for self-powered photodetector with high performance

Jiahong Zhong et al.

Summary: Engineering of van der Waals' two-dimensional material heterostructures has led to the fabrication of a high-performance self-powered photodetector with excellent current rectification characteristics and photovoltaic behaviors, capable of responding to a broad spectrum from visible to near-infrared with high responsivity and fast response speed. The heterojunction photodetector demonstrated great application potential in image recognition and is expected to bring new opportunities for highly sensitive, high-speed, and energy-efficient photodetectors for comprehensive applications.

van der Waals Magnets: Material Family, Detection and Modulation of Magnetism, and Perspective in Spintronics

Shengxue Yang et al.

Summary: van der Waals (vdW) materials show great potential in spintronics due to their excellent spin transportation, large spin-orbit coupling, and high-quality interfaces. Recent discovery of intrinsic vdW antiferromagnets and ferromagnets has laid the foundation for constructing all-vdW spintronic devices and studying low-dimensional magnetism. This review introduces representative families of vdW magnets, methods for reading out magnetic states, and various approaches for modulating the magnetism of vdW magnets.

A van der Waals interface that creates in-plane polarization and a spontaneous photovoltaic effect

Takatoshi Akamatsu et al.

Summary: Van der Waals interfaces can be formed by layer stacking without consideration of lattice constants or symmetries of individual building blocks. By engineering the symmetry of a van der Waals interface between tungsten selenide and black phosphorus, researchers observed a spontaneous photovoltaic effect resulting from in-plane electronic polarization.
