This paper summarizes the research advances on the classification, structural features, and biological function of long non-coding RNA (lncRNA). It also explains the key role of lncRNA in plant stress tolerance.
As a kind of over 200 nt RNA, long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) has no protein-coding ability. It exists in a large number of organisms and has multiple biological functions. It is mainly produced by the transcription of RNA polymerase II, and exerts its functions through an epigenetic mechanism, transcriptional regulation, post-transcriptional modification, and translation. LncRNA not only participates in plant growth and development but also plays a key role in plant responses to abiotic stresses. In this paper, the research advances on the classification, structural features, and biological function of lncRNA were summarized. The role of lncRNA involved in plant stress tolerance was also explicated.
