Microstructural origin of ultrahigh damping capacity in Ni50.8 Ti49.2 alloy containing nanodomains induced by insufficient annealing and low-temperature aging

Yuanwei Song et al.

Summary: The study introduces a Ni50.8Ti49.2 alloy with ultrahigh damping capacity achieved through a combination of severe deformation, insufficient annealing, and low-temperature aging. The high broad internal friction plateau in this alloy is attributed to the presence of nanodomains, stable coexistence of B19'-phase and R-phase, abundant phase boundaries, and movable interfaces. The critical role of low-temperature aging in inducing nanodomains and the generation of high-density nanodomains through insufficient annealing and low-temperature aging processes are confirmed.

The duration-energy-size enigma for acoustic emission

Blai Casals et al.

Summary: Acoustic emission (AE) measurements of avalanches in different systems show discrepancies with model predictions due to details of the AE measurements, such as the initial acoustic strain signal being modified by acoustic wave propagation. Simple model simulations demonstrate that typical avalanches follow observed AE results, with a specific probability distribution and characteristic shape. Additionally, the relationship between avalanche size and maximum AE avalanche amplitude deviates from the prediction of mean field theory.

Synergistic damping effect mechanism of magneto-mechanical hysteresis and dislocations energy dissipation in FeMnCrCo high entropy alloys

Wanxin Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of configurational entropy on microstructure, magnetic properties, and damping behaviors of Fe65-xMn20Cr15Cox (x = 0, 5, 10, 15) high entropy alloys were investigated. Results showed that as Co content increased, magnetic performance decreased while internal friction Q-1 increased; with increasing configurational entropy, a dislocation damping mechanism was introduced in addition to the ferromagnetic damping mechanism.

Crackling noise and avalanches in minerals

Ekhard K. H. Salje et al.

Summary: This review explains the non-smooth, jerky movements of microstructures under external forcing in minerals using avalanche theory. The probability to observe an avalanche jerk J follows a power law distribution, implying a large range of energies, lengths, and times. The generated patterns have high fractal dimensions and display great complexity.
