Enhanced creep performance in a polycrystalline superalloy driven by atomic-scale phase transformation along planar faults

Lola Lilensten et al.

Summary: This study investigates the differences in creep behavior of polycrystalline Ni-based superalloys with two different Nb contents, attributing the mechanical performance variation to phase transformations along planar faults. The presence of stacking faults and their composition in the alloys are analyzed using electron channeling contrast imaging and atom probe tomography, revealing insights into the underlying mechanisms of creep strain rate differences. The findings suggest a potential atomic-scale driven alloy design approach for enhancing creep resistance by promoting local phase transformations along planar faults at 750 degrees C.

Yielding behavior of a single-crystalline γ'-strengthened Co-Ti-Cr superalloy

A. Bezold et al.

Summary: The anomalous yielding behavior in Ni3Al or Ni-base superalloys is explained by the formation of immobile dislocation configurations via cross-slip of the leading superpartial of anti-phase boundary-coupled dislocation pairs. A systematic investigation of the anomalous yielding behavior of a single-crystalline Co-11Ti-15Cr superalloy by transmission electron microscopy revealed the absence of similar sessile dislocation configurations during the initial yielding stage. Shearing of gamma' precipitates via super-lattice stacking fault formation is the dominant deformation mechanism at the peak temperature. Furthermore, the high density of superlattice stacking faults and their interactions also lead to a pronounced work-hardening anomaly.
