Association of Collagen, Elastin, Glycosaminoglycans, and Macrophages With Tissue Ultimate Material Strength and Stretch in Human Thoracic Aortic Aneurysms: A Uniaxial Tension Study

Aziz Tokgoz et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the association between the development of aneurysms and fiber structures, inflammation, and GAG deposition. The results showed a positive correlation between GAG deposition and tension and elastin ratio, and a negative correlation with collagen ratio. Additionally, GAG deposition was also correlated with collagen fiber dispersion.

A discrete approach for modeling degraded elastic fibers in aortic dissection

Malte Rolf-Pissarczyk et al.

Summary: This study proposes a constitutive model that incorporates the degradation of inter-lamellar elastic fibers and verifies its ability to capture the degradation of these fibers during aortic dissection through finite element analysis. A patient-data motivated geometry study suggests that the degradation of radially-directed elastic fibers may trigger the propagation of dissection.

Microstructural and mechanical characterization of the layers of human descending thoracic aortas

Summary: The mechanical properties of human aortas are closely related to the layered tissue and microstructure at different length scales. Collagen fibers carry most of the load at larger strains, while their orientation distributions differ depending on the observation direction.
