Room-temperature optically detected magnetic resonance of single defects in hexagonal boron nitride

Hannah L. Stern et al.

Summary: In this study, the authors demonstrate optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) for single carbon-related defects in hexagonal boron nitride at room temperature, with significantly stronger contrast than the ensemble average. These findings offer a promising route towards realizing a room-temperature spin-photon quantum interface in hexagonal boron nitride.

Comparing Xe+pFIB and Ga+FIB for TEM sample preparation of Al alloys: Minimising FIB-induced artefacts

Xiangli Zhong et al.

Summary: The dual beam Xe+ plasma focused ion beam (Xe(+)pFIB) instrument has shown potential benefits over conventional Ga+FIB for site-specific TEM sample preparation. The study demonstrates that Xe(+)pFIB milling produces improved STEM/TEM samples compared to Ga+ milling, making it the preferred specimen preparation route. Strategies for minimizing FIB-induced artefacts are also proposed.

Controlled generation of luminescent centers in hexagonal boron nitride by irradiation engineering

M. Fischer et al.

Summary: The study explores the influence of kinetic energy and irradiation fluence on the generation of luminescent centers in two-dimensional hexagonal boron nitride materials, with a fivefold enhancement observed with increasing fluence. Molecular dynamics simulations clarify the generation mechanism and microscopic nature of these centers, with VNCB and V-B(-) identified as the most likely formed centers. Ab initio calculations of their optical properties show excellent agreement with experimental results, providing insights into the microscopic nature of quantum emitters.

Anomalous interfacial dynamics of single proton charges in binary aqueous solutions

Jean Comtet et al.

Summary: Our study investigated the dynamics of protons at the interface between an hBN crystal and binary mixtures of water and organic amphiphilic solvents, showing a significant influence of solvation on interfacial dynamics. Solvent content has a nontrivial effect on interfacial dynamics, leading at intermediate water fraction to an increased surface diffusivity and an increased affinity of the proton charges to the solid surface. Our measurements provide evidence of the notable role of solvation on interfacial proton charge transport.

Scalable and Deterministic Fabrication of Quantum Emitter Arrays from Hexagonal Boron Nitride

Chi Li et al.

Summary: The fabrication of large-scale arrays of single-photon emitters in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) shows promising results in isolating single defects and achieving near-unity yield of a single emitter at each pillar site with a diameter of around 250 nm. These results pave the way for scalability and high throughput fabrication of single-photon emitters for advanced quantum photonic applications.

Summary: In this study, STED microscopy with color centers in nanoscale flakes of hexagonal boron nitride was demonstrated, achieving a resolution of about 50 nm and the ability to resolve two color centers separated by 250 nm. The achieved resolution is limited by the numerical aperture of the objective lens and the available laser power, with a potential for achieving sub-10 nm resolution with an oil immersion objective lens.
