Electrochemical Conversion of Silica Nanoparticles to Silicon Nanotubes in Molten Salts: Implications for High-Performance Lithium-Ion Battery Anode

Fan Wang et al.

Summary: Understanding the material formation mechanism is crucial for material synthesis and exploitation. This study reveals a novel conversion mechanism of SiO2 particles to Si nanotubes through template- and catalyst-free one-step electrochemical synthesis, showing enhanced lithium-storage performances. The newly formed SiOx layers are deeply reduced into SNTs, and the morphology of silicon-based nanostructures can be controlled by altering the applied voltage between a SiO2 cathode and a graphite anode.

Fabricating Silicon Nanotubes by Electrochemical Exfoliation and Reduction of Layer-Structured CaSiO3 in Molten Salt

Fan Wang et al.

Summary: This study presents a novel method for preparing silicon nanotubes without using a template or catalyst, by electrochemically reducing layer-structured calcium silicate in molten salts. The resulting SNTs exhibit controllable diameter and wall thickness, and show high lithium storage capacity, rate capability, and cycling stability. The template- and catalyst-free electrochemical approach offers a straightforward way to prepare SNTs with potential applications in other tubular structure materials.
