Dipeptide end-capping resultant multiple hydrogen bonds triggering self-healing waterborne polyurethane elastomers

Ning Zhang et al.

Summary: Self-repairing materials with damage self-healing ability have the potential to improve the reliability, durability, and life of materials. However, waterborne polyurethane (WPU) faces challenges in its self-repair performance in the ambient environment. In this work, the use of glycylglycine methyl ester as a functional end-capping reagent improves the self-healing ability of WPU.

Elastic vitrimers: Beyond thermoplastic and thermoset elastomers

Jiancheng Luo et al.

Summary: Thermoset elastomers possess mechanical robustness, high thermal/chemical resistance, and good dimensional stability, making them widely used in industry and frontier research. However, the presence of permanent crosslinks significantly limits their recyclability. Vitrimers, polymer networks with associative exchangeable crosslinkers, provide a solution for the circularity of thermoset elastomers. This review focuses on the design, synthesis, fundamental physics, and property evaluation of elastic vitrimers based on different types of dynamic covalent bonds. Control over the network parameters allows for tailoring of mechanical performance, network dynamics, self-healing capability, and recyclability. The responsive behavior of elastic vitrimers to external stimuli such as temperature, light, and moisture can be controlled due to the dynamic nature of reversible chemical bonds. The review also discusses the critical physical parameters of elastic vitrimers and their comparison with commonly used thermoset and thermoplastic elastomers, as well as the merits, bottlenecks, and future research directions of elastic vitrimers for practical applications in various fields.

Autonomous Self-Healing Elastomers with Unprecedented Adhesion Force

Zhen Zhang et al.

Summary: This study presents a series of autonomous self-healable and highly adhesive elastomers with outstanding mechanical properties and ultrahigh adhesion force. The elastomers can self-heal autonomously with full recovery of functionalities and demonstrate resilience to water during the healing process. They also exhibit negligible sensitivity to dust on surfaces, distinguishing them from regular adhesive polymers. These high-toughness, autonomous self-healable, and ultra-adhesive elastomers open up new possibilities for applications in various fields.

Molecular Simulations of the Microstructure Evolution of Solid Electrolyte Interphase during Cyclic Charging/Discharging

Po-Yu Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the formation and evolution of solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) films for a Li-metal anode under cyclic charging/discharging processes in two distinct dimensions, namely, electrolyte compositions and initial surface morphologies. The simulations suggest that regardless of the electrolyte compositions and initial anode morphologies, inhomogeneous Li reduction occurs, leading to the formation of Li-reduction hotspots during cyclic charging cycles, which could serve as the seed for subsequent dendrite growth. The findings provide insights for designing artificial SEI layers or electrolytes for long-life, high-capacity Li-ion batteries.
