Summary: This study demonstrates that by fabricating hybrid anodes with uniform mixtures of graphite and hard carbon, it is possible to achieve high-energy density and efficient fast charging in Li-ion batteries. The optimized hybrid anodes retain significantly higher specific energy after 500 cycles of fast charging compared to graphite anodes under the same conditions, making them a promising solution for electric vehicles.

Interplay of Lithium Intercalation and Plating on a Single Graphite Particle

Tao Gao et al.

Summary: Improving safety, increasing charging rates, and extending the lifetime of lithium-ion batteries is a major challenge, with the key being to control lithium plating on graphite anodes. Experimental studies have shown that the onset of plating is strongly coupled with phase separation in graphite, occurring only on the fully lithiated edges of particles. The competition between Li insertion and plating is further elucidated through energetics and kinetics analysis.

Elucidating the structural redox behaviors of nanostructured expanded graphite anodes toward fast-charging and high-performance lithium-ion batteries

Dong-Kyu Son et al.

Summary: In this study, systematic thermal exfoliation of expandable graphite was conducted to investigate the structural redox behaviors of nanostructured EGs as high-rate anodes for Li-ion storage. The results showed that subtle changes in the thermal exfoliation time significantly affect the microstructure and Li-ion reversible de/intercalation kinetics of the EG samples, leading to entirely different staged phase transitions. EG30, treated at 600 degrees C for 30 min, exhibited outstanding performance in LIBs with high specific capacity, rate capability, and Coulombic efficiency, showing potential for application in electric vehicles and portable electronic devices.
