How We Do It: Implementing a Virtual, Multi-Institutional Collaborative Education Model for the COVID-19 Pandemic and Beyond

Ariana Metchik et al.

Summary: This study describes a virtual educational collaboration involving over 50 general surgery residency programs during the COVID-19 pandemic, which provided enhanced learning opportunities for surgical residents. By establishing a collaborative teaching network, surgical residents were able to receive daily didactics from experts in the field while maintaining social distancing and providing essential clinical care. Multi-institutional collaboration enabled continued didactic education, broadening expertise available to residents and decreasing burden on faculty, potentially serving as a framework for future collaborations beyond the COVID-19 era.
