Racial and Ethnic Disparities in the Delayed Diagnosis of Appendicitis Among Children

Monika K. Goyal et al.

Summary: This study revealed racial disparities in rates of appendiceal perforation, delayed diagnosis of appendicitis, and diagnostic imaging during prior emergency department visits in pediatric patients. Non-Hispanic Black children had a higher likelihood of perforation and delayed diagnosis, as well as lower rates of diagnostic imaging compared to Non-Hispanic White children.

Low-Value Diagnostic Imaging in Children with Medicaid

Jennifer R. Marin et al.

Summary: A retrospective study in pediatric Medicaid beneficiaries in Pennsylvania estimated rates and settings of low-value imaging and associated expenditures. Findings showed that more than 1 in 20 encounters included low-value imaging, mostly in non-pediatric EDs, with bronchiolitis, head trauma, and headache being the most common conditions. Interventions are needed to decrease the future performance of these low-value services.

Impact of patient race/ethnicity on emergency department management of pediatric gastroenteritis in the setting of a clinical pathway

Morgan Congdon et al.

Summary: Despite the implementation of a clinical pathway, NH-Black, Hispanic, and NH-other children presenting to the emergency department with AGE/dehydration were less likely to receive IVF or be admitted to the hospital compared to NH-White counterparts, and had shorter LOS. NH-Black and Hispanic patients had shorter LOS, but there were no significant differences in ED revisits.
