Application of 233 nm far-UVC LEDs for eradication of MRSA and MSSA and risk assessment on skin models

Paula Zwicker et al.

Summary: A newly developed UVC LED source with a wavelength of 233 nm has been proven to be effective in bactericidal and well-tolerated on the skin. The study analyzed the bactericidal efficacy qualitatively and quantitatively using different bacterial strains and soil loads. It also assessed the compatibility of the radiation doses on skin models and compared it to UVC radiation from discharge lamps and UVB radiation. The results showed high bactericidal efficacy with minimal skin damage and low radical formation.

Development and characterization of a 3D in vitro model mimicking acneic skin

Marine Laclaverie et al.

Summary: This study successfully developed in vitro 3D models mimicking acneic skin by combining altered sebum composition and C. acnes invasion. Different strains of C. acnes had varying impacts on the model, with IA1 strains inducing major acneic skin hallmarks. This highlighted the role of C. acnes phylotypes in affecting epidermal physiology and suggested a potential role of the ecosystem in controlling C. acnes virulence in healthy skin.

Characterization of radical types, penetration profile and distribution pattern of the topically applied photosensitizer THPTS in porcine skin ex vivo

S. B. Lohan et al.

Summary: Topical photodynamic therapy (PDT) is mainly used for treating dermato-oncological diseases, with a maximum penetration depth of around 12±5μm. Irradiation within the spectral range of 650-850 nm is needed to activate the photosensitizer Tetrahydroporphyrin-Tetratosylat (THPTS). An incubation time of 10 minutes shows the highest radical production.

Switching from healthy to unhealthy oxidative stress - does the radical type can be used as an indicator?

S. B. Lohan et al.

Summary: UV radiation causes free radical formation, leading to immunological modulations, skin aging, or skin cancer. A critical radical concentration has been identified in UV and visible light regions as a marker for an imbalance in the redox system. This transition point indicates an inversion in the ratio of ROS to LOS, highlighting the importance of stress in detecting this imbalance.
