International connectivity and the digital divide in Sub-Saharan Africa

Joel Cariolle

Summary: In recent years, the deployment of fiber submarine cables has significantly improved international connectivity and helped bridge the digital divide in Africa, particularly in Eastern and Southern Africa where Internet penetration rates have increased noticeably. The laying of these cables has contributed to a 3-5 percentage point increase in Internet penetration rates in the region, a substantial advancement considering the previous level of connectivity in the subcontinent.
